Past Progressive.

We use the past progressive to describe an action that was in progress at a specific time in past. The action began before the specific time and may or may not continue alter the specific time. We can use the past progressive with simple past to talk about an action was interrupted by another action. Use the simple past for the interrupting action. We can use the past progressive with while to talk about two actions in progress at the same time in the past. Use the past progressive in both clauses. Notice that the time clause can come at the beginning or the end of the sentence. Use a comma after the time clause when it comes at the beginning. Do not use a comma when it comes at the end. Use the past progressive to focus in the duration o fan action, not its completion and use the simple past to focus on the completion of an action. For example:

  • What were you doing last night?
  • While she was singing, he left.
  • While I was writing a HAIKU, my mother was cooking dinner.
  • When he called, I was doing homework.
  • My sister was studying History.
  • My sister study History.

Simple Past.

We can use the simple past when we want to talk about actions, states, or situations that are finished. We can use it with time expressions that refer to the past. When we use the simple past of regular verbs, we need to add –d or –ed to the base form of the verb. When we use irregular verbs, we can’t add –d or –ed because the verb changes. For example:

  • She was a singer.
  • By 2003 she had many songs.
  • She preferred to get married.
  • She went to New York.

Some poetry

A girl came from the street.
She didn’t know I saw.
She drank a glass of water.
And gave me a smile.
And then she left the school.
With a nice car.
And then came back for me.
To leave her number.

One night with me.

I will tell a very important day for me. When I celebrated one month with my girlfriend, it was her father's birthday, so instead of leaving us alone to go the movies or a party or to celebrate together, we went to celebrate her dad's birthday at a family dinner. She introduced me to all her family and we were having a good time. The dinner was in the San Isidro where the place had another party called "Soft". Her sister is older and has a boyfriend, so they went for a few minutes to the other party and returned to us with some used tickets, so we could enter without paying. After that, we were having fun and we danced a lot. We met many people and saw people that we hadn't seen for a long. And they gave us hugs and took many pictures of us for our first month together. Then we had to return to the dinner because it was raining and my girlfriend had forgotten her jacket. After we went for her jacket, we returned to the party and most people had left. So we left too and a friend came to take me home. But when she came for me, her mother was calling for her to go home, so she left me at a friend’s house in Portal de Aragon at a party where she would returned . When I arrived at the party, it already was finishing and only a few people were there. I said hello to the few remaining and then I looked at the floor and was a girl unconscience. I ask to a friend why she was on the floor and he told me that she wassick. He says to me “don’t worry” and I left her with her friends. After a while I met several people and I had fun for a while. My dad came for me at that party and we gave a friend a ride. He lives near my house. When we left my friend, my dad got angry with me because he doesn’t like giving rides o people who should walk to their homes. I only gives rides to my frineds if the person who is driving is my sister or my mother. I still remember I met a friend and it was very funny because she confused me with someone else. She came and hugged me and I did not know her well, and then I told her that I wasn’t the person she thought. So a friend introduced us and she was very embarrassed but I told her not to worry, that this happenes every time we go out. This is what I did the day I celebrate a month with my girlfriend.
